Lindy
recommends "Memoirs
of a Geisha " by Andrew Golden. It's one of the best
books I've ever read. And by the way, where's Lindy's

| Spartina |
Spartina.
Dick Pierce, fisherman and boat-builder, lives on the Rhode
Island shore in a backwater world of salt marshes, alcoholic
fishermen, crab boats and old homesteads disappearing under
new resorts for inland tourists. A stubborn man thoughtful
enough to know that the world is becoming too small for
men like himself, Pierce has a mortgage, a family, a "puny
income from lobstering" and a dream: to finish the half-built
boat in his backyard so he can fish for red crabs out in
deep water, make some real money and raise himself and his
family up. He is a classic American solitary hero, and Casey
knows the sloughs of the Rhode Island shore as well as any
fisherman. National Book Award Winner. |

| The
Probe |
|
The
Probe. This story, set in Rhode Island, centers on
the Providence Beacon (the statewide newspaper), and has
many colorful characters. The author melds the characters
together well around the newspaper and keeps us guessing
about the who and why of the murder of the publisher of
the Providence Beacon.

| Messiah |
|
There
is a book in paperback called "Messiah"
by Boris Starling. It's about a detective investigating
serial killings that have a resemblance to the deaths
of the 12 Apostles. It can be a little gory,but it's a
whodunnit that will keep you guessing. One of my all time
fave books.

| Summer
Reading |
John,
I just read
a new book called Beautiful
Monsters and it had to be the best book I've read
in a long while. Amazon has it,although I got it at a
bookstore. Let me know if you want me to mail it to you.
It 's not
that long but it's kind of like hysterical, spiritual
humor. The author is quite an independent thinker. Please
let me know what you think,
Take care,
Chaz

| "study
this book" |
In
1981 or 1982 I was in Cianci's den at his house on Blackstone
Blvd. I was looking at his book collection and couldn't
help but notice one book prominently displayed on a middle
shelf all by itself. He observed me looking at it, put his
hand on my shoulder and said "son if you do nothing else,
study this book". The book that his then wife Sheila later
told me he had read at least a dozen times was Mein
Kampf. |

| excellent
book on terrorism |
Regarding
the topic of terrorism on the May 16th show and relevant
to today's show May 20th, I can tell you that earlier this
year I read a book that describes some of the acts of terrorism
that have been performed against the USA on 9/11 - before
the date 9/11. The title of the book is The New Jackals,
Bin Laden and the Future of Terrorism, by Simon Reeve, 1998.
The book describes the WTC car bombing in 1993 and continues
to track the terrorists to Manila in the Philippines. The
experimental bomb factory near Manila was created by Ramzi
Yousef (subsequently convicted of the 1993 crime) and the
bombs were tested out on some Asian flights until the bomb
was perfected to actually blow up a large aircraft. The
jawdropper #1 was that the factory was busted through Yousef's
own stupidity and their laptop was confiscated by some officials.
The information on the laptop was full of the connections
and dates of future acts of terrorism. This was years before
9/11.
Jawdropper #2 was the description of shoe bombs. This also
before 9/11 Jawdropper #3 was the implication of the still
silent Terry Nichols (Oklahoma bombing) and his mail order
bride from Manila. Terry Nichols visited the same island
in the Philippines where Ramzi was operating his bomb school.
Jawdropper #4 was the information of how terrorists would
fly airplanes into very famous landmarks - not all in the
USA, ex. Eiffel Tower. Where were our protecting agencies?
I'm sure there were more books written than what I found
the book (purchased in the Brown Bookstore), published years
before 9/11 the one I have described.
