today's show |
|
Well,
how about it? Are you going to use the airwaves to
your own glory and talk about meaningless
drivel again... or will you be a man and talk about meaningful
things like how France and Germany have agreed not to
support the war and how Bush's rating is bottoming out?
Is the "Independent
Man" just a gimick or can you really be independent
without losing your job?

Get off the Homeless! |
|
Spending
2 days on the homeless? What is your solution? Put
them in jail? You keep saying this
type of life is "encouraged" who encourages
it? There are MANY agencies out there tryinng to help
these people get off the street. Do you know that 1 in
3 homeless are children? The ones that WANT to be there
are probably the mentally ill that the government kicked
loose years ago. Maybe we should just let them freeze
in teh streets and you could take the independent children
on a guided tour of the frozen bums?
I just haven't heard you come up w/any type of solution. I think they should
open up the state legislature and treat these people to some 17,000$ lunches!

independent man |
|
Long time listener, first time e-mailer.
Love your show and just wanted to weigh in on current
U.S. foreign policy concerning the threat of rogue nations.
When President Bush referred to the axis of evil consisting
of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea post September 11th, many
citizens scoffed at the remark. These ignorant liberals
were exposed for what they are: spineless cowards and
proponents of welfare expansion who cling to organized
labor and the jewish ownership of the media and Hollywood
to remain in power.
Anyhow, Iraq is currently being inspected for WMD,
North Korea is actively pursuing them in the face of
protest from the international community (in direct violation
of the 1964 nuclear non-proliferation treaty) and Iran
is passively pursuing nuclear weapons. The Bush administration
and particularly Donald Rumsfeld have told the American
people that the U.S. can effectively fight and win a
two front war due to its unmatched military prowess.
However this strategy is unnecessary.
Iraq is clearly
hiding WMD with their 12,000 document delaying inspectors
from finding the truth and U.S. military
action. Yet the same Bush critics who want solid evidence
before an Iraq attack want immediate U.S. action in North
Korea. This cat and mouse game needs to end. The United
States should deal with the Iraqi threat accordingly
with an escalation of force as the Great Harry Truman
did to bring WWII to an abrupt conclusion by merely killing
a few Japs to showcase the awesome protection powers
of nuclear weapons. Iraq’s WMD are a direct threat
to the number one U.S. vital interest: security and survival.
With the stakes so high, anything must be done to achieve
victory no matter how horrible. Just as Jeffrey Amhearst
recognized the threat of heathen Pontiac Indians who
committed unprovoked attacks on white settlers and gave
them smallpox infested blankets and handkerchiefs, we
must nuke Iraq. The first bomb would annihilate Baghdad
and kill many inferior muslims who have misinterpreted
the peaceful teachings of Islam. Killing of innocent
people is usually wrong, however Saddam had used chemical
weapons on his own Kurdish people in northern Iraq and
we must show him what affect our weapons can bring. The
second bomb would destroy everything else important in
Iraq with some of the nuclear fallout reaching axis of
evil partner Iran for effect.
Next, Iraq
would undergo a regime change where the country would
be ruled by an American general under martial
law, in the same manner as God’s chosen general
Douglas Macarthur ruled Japan after Truman heroically
nuked Japan twice, another insurgent people who understand
actions and not diplomatic dealings. The Japan nuclear
diplomacy model is a great analogy since the second bomb
in 1945 scared the Russians and the second bomb today
would scare the North Koreans and Iranians.
Now that
Iraq is obliterated and under U.S. control, Iran would
be much more friendly to us with their threat
highly reduced for the most part. U.S. control here could
exact revenge for the Iranian hostage crisis. I believe
places of worship and headdresses should be burned as
advocated by Martin Luther in his unplagiarized work “On
the Jews”. These actions would isolate the triad’s
other member North Korea.
The first
nuke dropped on North Korea should be at Inchon to
commemorate Douglas Macarthur’s incredible
amphibious invasion there during the Korean War, only
topped by the D-Day invasion at Normandy in greatness.
Once North Korea retreats to back past the 38th parallel,
the United States will be in a much stronger bargaining
position with them. Psychological leaflets should be
dropped in all rice paddies so that the Korean Commies
know how inferior their backwards and gook society really
is.
With all
3 nations of the axis severely weakened, the only future
threat would be China. These gooks could
be intimidated with a second bomb dropped on North Korea
for effect, again following Truman’s nuclear model
concerning Japan that scared the Russians from using
nukes against the U.S. during the Cold War. A return
to the massive retaliation policies of Dwight D. Eisenhower
is appropriate today.
With foreign
policy threats now dealt with accordingly, the United
States could return focus to all-important
domestic issues. The military funding could now be cut
to spur economic growth. Casino’s and reservations
could be seized so that the Indians could be shipped
to Iraq to live in nuclear shell-holes complete with
radiation. Casino’s would be given back to the
Italian mafia which run them in a cost effective manner
with profits used to improve the failing U.S. public
school system.

ri person of the year |
|
John,
In my mind, there is only one person who should qualify
for being the "Person of the Year in Rhode Island
for the year 2002". That person is W. Dennis Aiken,
lead FBI investigator in the Plunder Dome case. Due to
his determined, selfless and fearless resolve, we actually
lived long enough to see the former mayor of Providence,
Vincent Cianci, locked up with the rest of the crooks.
Mr. Aiken has given the city of Providence a chance to
regain its rightful place as the shining star of New
England.
Our collective hats should be raised in honor of Mr.
W. Dennis Aiken. Congratulations for a job well done!

Swinging At
The Black Key Club |
|
Hello...
Lisa here...aka...WILDTHING :)~ ...after hearing the
recent interview between John and Scratch (owner of the
Black Key Club) I was proud and I was furious. I am VERY
proud to say that my husband and I are members of the
Black Key Club...we have been members of the club even
before Mike and Scratch took over, so we do know the
club well. We are in our mid 30's and have been swingers
for 5+ years now. We're very happy in what we do! We
have had (safe) sex with others at the club :)~ unlike
the members that had called in today who haven't reached
that stage yet so to speak :-). There has also been times
when we just stayed with each other and didn't play with
others. You do whatever you feel comfortable with :-)
There isn't a better club out there than the Black Key
Club. It's very well run...unless you've seen the place
like we have (many times) you should NOT judge it. We
have attended a lot of other parties/clubs so we can
compare and say that it's the cleanest, most organized,
and comfortable place we have been to. There are so many
swingers in this world...a lot of which are discreet
and keep their swinging quiet due to fear of the uptight
of the world condemning them. I am NOT that way and we
have no shame at all in what we do. We don't announce
it to anyone, but if you ask us we'll tell you straight
out. We are exhibitionist and we look at it this way,
watch if it turns you on :)~, but if you're offended
by what we do then go away and mind your own business!
I challenge Mr. John DePetro to go to the club himself
and observe so that you can see that it's not a sick & twisted
place like you and so many fear,...just make sure I'm
there! *LOL* You see Mr. DePetro in my opinion you had
cut Scratch off too many times when he was talking and
thought the dungeon was a joke?!?!?! Where do you and
those prudish people who called in today with bad attitudes
get off??? I mean you and they have obviously never experienced
the lifestyle (know you secretly wish you could though),
but choose to condemn it need to learn not to judge others
that they don't even know. We (swingers) are not judging
you! Let me just say that my husband and I are your typical
every day "normal" people *lol*, we've been
together for 16 years (still very much in love), have
children, job etc...What we do behind closed doors is
nobody's business unless we choose it to be...so for
all the jerks who called in...they need to ask themselves
a question...."Why was I so hostile and rude?" I
believe it's because you really don't understand...so
shouldn't you at least be open minded and instead of
judging others just let people who choose to be in this
lifestyle have their freedom??? Nobody is sending you
an invitation to come to a swing party or to come and
watch...so relax!...you'll live longer ;-) On a final
note I want to say thank you Scratch ;-) for a job well
done and thank you (&Mike) again for not allowing
people like the hostile people that called in today into
our club...if ya did the Wildthing wouldn't be there
anymore ;-)
Proud to be a swinger and a member of the club!!!

Hi John,
I hope you duly noted whose names were missing on the
Separation of Powers bill--where was Murphy's name
and where was our former leader??? I somehow don't
think that much will change. Wasn't Murphy an attorney
for Plunderdome defendant Ed Voccola????
You can bet the farm that Patrick Lynch won't investigate
the spending of the General Assembly. They are for the
most part "his boys". I'm counting on you and
Arlene to keep on this issue. You two have been doing
a great job keeping this in the public's eye and hope
you will continue. We are all behind you and your efforts--it's
too bad there aren't more of you!!!!
Keep up the wonderful work!!!

John
There must be a better way to attract a younger (under
33?) listening audience than to give that guy from
the black key club, who sounds like a major CREEP,
a
forum to promote his
debauchery. (If I was going to experiment sexually, it
certainly wouldn't be with a group of strangers with
no histories, medical
screening, or identities. One would be asking for trouble
to get involved with something like this) I turned you
off (no pun intended) when this guy started going on about
bondage lessons on Tuesday nights? Crike!
Our state is rich with arts, culture, and music of all
kinds and you put this guy on? I am sorely disappointed
with you... but then again, there's a fine line between
pleasure and pain !

Hi Independent Man,
Hey pretty soon your are going to have a larger audience

Don't forget, this Thursday is the last Thursday of the

Maybe you can do your show on Thursdays from room 135!

Patrick: I won't be driven by Kathy Gregg.
Arlene: Will you follow up on Brad Gorham's complaint?
Patrick: I have not received a FORMAL complaint.

What does he think the yellow pages are for? This doesn't

Departed workers... |
|
Todays
Projo article "Departed
workers on state roll" contains a number of names
of "work study interns" and "part time
employees" that jump out. such as Joseph McBurney,
Thomas Carl, Vincent Mesolella and Michael McBurney.
If we want to clean out government in RI we can start
by declaring war on the Pawtucket Mafia. The McBurney's,
Goldbergs, Harwoods and Lynch's are the root of RI coruption
and until those families are neutralized change is impossible.

Dear John,
I have actually been in a Broadway show when cell phones
have gone off. It does happen, but I don't think there
should be a LAW banning it. I also agree with you that
a cell phone ringing in a museum shouldn't really bother
anyone. BTW, I am sure there are other things that could
be legislated that would be of more help to the people
of NY.

Peter Anthony on
the 1-15-03 show |
|
Dear John:
I was listening in the car and wasn't able to hold for
an on-air comment, but wanted to address Peter Anthony's
soap box commentary...
I have not seen the Miller ad and do not watch football
(unless forced by gunpoint). However, I have learned
that over the course of my daughter's 3 years of life,
that I, as a parent, UNFORTUNATELY do indeed have to
monitor every little thing that comes up on television
- no matter what time of day or what program.
As an example, we like to watch the Animal Planet channel
often and I'm always "editing out" the questionable
commercials by changing the channel or diverting her
attention for a moment... she doesn't need to see a commercial
for a pet autopsy that will air later in the evening.
It's unfortunate, but it's a fact of parenthood these
days.
It sounds like Peter Anthony experienced a rude awakening.
However, instead of complaining about it and going nowhere
on the John DePetro show with dead end debate after dead
end debate, he really should have been offering some
sort of solution or offering to be a leader in generating
a petition of some sort. Debating with a handful of Rhode
Islanders will get you nowhere
except a few minutes of forgotten air time once the next
show begins at 2 p.m.
His excuse of "I shouldn't have to change the channel" is
mute. True, it would be nice if we didn't have to worry
about this type of advertising in the middle of the day,
but the fact remains that we do have to worry about it.
So, Mr. Peter Anthony, please stop debating and start
doing! Go out and make a difference - start that petition,
change the channel, do something! I'll be there to support
whatever you generate in terms of a positive action.
Thanks,
Dawn M. Viola
P.S. I typically don't purchase the Providence Journal
because it drives me crazy to read the articles at a
5th grade level... we've switched to the New York Times,
which is slightly better, but not much.

state house |
|
John, I moved here
from the Sacramento, CA area. That county is geographically
similar to Rhode Island in area and
has the same population, 1.2 million. That entire county
is run by 5 County Supervisors! There are 5 incorporated
cities with a city council and separate police and fire
departments. The rest of the area is patrolled by the
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Dept. and the County
Fire Department. There were several school districts.
The county ran just fine with this little bit of government.
There is too much government here. We are paying for
this state legislature, the mayors, city councils, police
chiefs, fire chiefs, school districts, etc. I know we
can not probably change this structure, but we can at
least have a fiscally well run state. Keep beating the
drum! It can be done with less government; look at Sacramento
County. Then there would be money to help the people
who need it, or even lower our taxes. Imagine that…..

Legislative employees? |
|
My question is this: If all of the 579+/-
staff people showed up at 9 AM on Monday to report to
work, just where would they all sit? Do you really think
that there are that many chairs in the whole building?
It would be truly just if our Attorney General ever demanded
the time cards and job descriptions of each of these
people as well as a statement of each as to whom they
report, how often, and what their duties are.
We have a better chance of being hit by lightning as
long as PAPA Lynch and Big Vin M. are still in cahoots.

One voluntary subgroup goes to the meetings that interview

Call COMMON CAUSE. One subgroup goes to the Ethics Commission
hearings. Want to go? Call OPERATION CLEAN GOVERNMENT.

its to late for the miitary to suit up. They also have

General Assembly Abuse |
|
Hi I.M.:
Let's all be consistent now...we all wanted the Feds
to investigate PlunderDome, we all want the Feds to investigate
corruption in the Providence Police Dept, and now it
is long overdue to ask the Feds to investigate possible
criminal conduct in the General Assembly.
The reasons we want a totally unbiased investigation
are the same whether the AG is Whitehouse or Lynch. You
would think that they would want it that way also to
avoid any hint of partisanship?
Imagine Speaker MurphWood wanting the JCLS audit to
ONLY go back to July 2002? If our new Governor won't
act to initiate an investigation; the people MUST!

of this should be the true test. Otherwise, they are

Continuous screwing of voters by entrenched democrats |
|
Hello John,
" Happy New Year!"
I enjoyed your show yesterday and I do hope that one
day, the entrenched politicians will be exposed and voted
out of office. We must be a laughing stock of this country
by now and the voters of the state are partly to blame
for their bleeding heart inconsistency to continuously
reelect the same crooks over and over again.
I always make it a point to be on the same page as you
and the many great watch dog organizations in this state
who are as fed up with this degradation as you and I
are.
Reading the page in Projo on Sunday, I was appalled
to see that there is at least one state auditor for every
10 Rhode Islanders. And the titles of some of the other
high paid lap dogs are ridiculous.
Please continue
with your great work and also the great work of some
of the other great organizations, here in
Rhode Island. We need to somehow reach the lame voters
and enlighten them too. I hope that our new governor
is up to the task, unlike our past lame Almond duck.
Almond probably will one day soon be in the Guinness
record books for the most time occupying the governors
seat without moving from it.
Have a great day, John!

Fed Up! |
|
Dear
John, in the early 1980's, both of my parents were
diagnosed with terminal cancer, 7
weeks apart. My dad died first, and I had to quit my
job to take care of my mother at home, as well as raise
a child alone on $40.00 a week child support, and take
care of EVERYTHING! We were totally financially strapped
with medical bills totalling about $500,000. Under the
circumstances, I thought we might be qualified for some
help from Welfare. I met with a case worker, filled out
the paperwork, and apparently qualified for a helping
hand. Then the case worker asked what kind of car I had.
I said that it was almost brand new. My mom had signed
it over to me since she could no longer drive, and it
was certainly more reliable transportation than my old
car, which I had sold. I needed that car to take her
to radiation therapy five days a week. The expression
on the caseworker's face had changed to one of concern.
She obtained the Blue Book value of the car and had the
following bomb to drop: The car was worth too much! We
would have to sell it, live off the proceeds until we
were down to a certain amount of savings, and then reapply
for help. I informed her that my mom had metastatic breast
cancer. Would it be more appropriate to shove her on
a bus to Providence five days a week for radiation, or
should she walk??? By this time, I was beside myself
with anger. I informed her that if I were a single mother
of six kids who sat on my butt all day long and CHOSE
NOT TO WORK, I would probably qualify for everything
they had. Her jaw dropped, but her eyes said I was probably
correct. I stormed out. I tell you this story because
I am fed up with people such as your guests today who
feel they are ENTITLED to all kinds of help. Perhaps
it is THEIR fault that they are uneducated and can't
earn more than minimum wage. WORK TWO OR THREE JOBS!
TRY TO LEARN ANOTHER TRADE! Believe me, I am all for
helping people out in a time of need. And I certainly
know that many people are in dire circumstances not of
their own making, as I was. For all these people, my
heart bleeds and I would be more than willing to lend
a helping hand. But I have a sneaking suspicion that
a lot of the folks that are asking for financial help
are not giving it their all. The attitude today is WE
ARE ENTITLED. The poor, homeless, elderly, etc., all
feel they are "owed". I say, stop the greed.
If you have a real need for my help, whatever age or
circumstance you are in, I will do the best I can for
you, provided that you also do the best you can for yourself.
But, don't for a second think that I "owe" you
anything. I don't.

Today's (1/14/03) show |
|
I
caught it late, but had my reactions; none the less.
I feel President Bush's cutting of heating
help is wrong, too. However, I was also incensed by the
guest's too ready asssumptions that anyone who was fed
up with the leaching that has gone on by undocumenteds
- illegals - was a racist; and his ready insults following
those non-listening assumptions. There is such a thing
as righteous indignation and slow burns that finallly
explode into righteous anger. I also notice he contradicted
himself in answering the question of how the funds are
distributed. He first said most of the funds went to
keeping the organization going - administrative costs.
He then said "...to see that the bulk of our funds
go to helping those who need it..."; or words to
that effect. Those are contradictory statements. Also,
much of the real problem is that affordable housing is
being slotted for the poor - still at high prices by
some sort of federal funding; with more and more people
being priced into a new poverty level. That doesn't leave
people earning $7.00 an hour in a very good place, but
at least they do get some help. For that individual and
others like him.; more educatuion would be a wise and
blessed thing. At any rate; for such a liberal state;
I do not understand why and how price controls were not
imposed years ago. If real estate is 30% overpriced for
this state; rentals are even worse.

Internships |
|
John:
I interned during the summers of 1986-1988 at the RI
Attorney General's Office. It was a great experience.
But I knew I wasn't going to make any money. The RI Intership
program (still run by the same guy today at the state
house: Bob Gemma) paid me a stipend of $150. a month!
And I worked 40 hours a week for 12 weeks! The program
made you work for it too; you had to send in all sorts
of reports to get paid.
I knew it was a resume builder, and I enjoyed the work.
But had I known that there were "secret internships" paying
big bucks, I wouldn't have worked for $150. a month.
Please call Mr. Gemma and ask him about this special
program. And can I sign up for my retroactive pay?

Legislative Budget |
|
Hi
John,
While I applaud your attack on the payroll and other "crimes"
in the legislature, the real problem is not Balance of
Power but the absence of more representation from the
Republican party. The 2 party system builds in "watchdogs"
over the Party in power. Most of the outrages we all see
in the legislature are due to the fact that there is no
opposing party to cry foul when these things happen. That's
how it works in the other 49 states and our government
in Washington. Le'ts get some Republicans (the dreaded
R word) in office to be the watchdogs over all these Democrats.
This is the solution to so many of the problems this state
has.

another state house mystery! |
|
good
morning john!
i have to say yesterday's work and input from both you
and arlene was stunning!
this travesty on smith hill is more than most can comprehend.
i would love to volunteer to help with a rally on the
state house lawn if we could get you, arlene, kass, karen
adams, paul mueller or hummel and maybe brian crandall.
anyway, basically... anything it would take to get a media
blitz in order to swarm a rally at the steps of the state
house and make these albatrosses come out from hiding
and make themselves accountable. you are the ones in power!!!
your voices keep a level playing field! (i was told the
phone lines at the state house were down all day! if it
was so, it would be just apropos! shine a light and roaches
run and hide.)
anyway... this is a letter i sent to brian crandall, also
channel 6 and 12 with some of my thoughts... (better get
your coffee! LOL!)
be well john! we gotta beat this thing. our families depend
on this.

big issue? |

John
What is the big issue? I agree it is digusting but I hate
to tell you it has been going on for years. This state
is worse than Huey Long of Louisana in the 1920's and
30's. This state has to mamny Godfather wannabe's if you
want anything done here you have to grease someone's
hand. You should also mention the article of Cranston
with it's bond rating. One of your caller mentioned
about what it will do to the economy Fleet left and they
are selling buildings Fidelity is leaving in March for
Texas. Metlife is in finacial trouble. I have got to
the point I will not deal with any New England based
company because they SUCK. Especially Rhode Island based
companies. I have two little boys they did not get any
Hasbro made toys because of their location here. I hope
to be relocating to Texas in the next few months I know
I will be teased because of coming from Rhode Island.
I would be better off telling people I am from West
Virginia.

Summer intern question |
|
One
question that I did not hear asked on your program and
that is what does the $16,835 allegedly paid to the highest
paid summer intern represent? It is the amount actually
paid to the person or the salary projected over the standard
State 26 pay periods?
According to the printout in the Journal the salary figures
suggest annualized salary. If that is the case then the
highest paid summer intern was probably not paid the $16,835
cited.
To calculate the actual amount paid one must divide the
annual amount ($16,835) by 26 then multiply by the actual
number of pay periods worked. If you divide the $16,835
by 26 state pay periods ($647.50 per pay period) then
by the number of hours in a state pay period (70) the
result is $9.25 per hour. Actual pay = hourly rate x hours
worked.
Over the course of your program you suggest that the person
was paid the entire $16,835 for working for the summer.
In this case the annualized pay (assuming a 12 week summer
term) works out to be $67,340 or $37.27 per hour.
Some of the work you do on the radio is useful but it
is curious that you ignore so basic a question as the
difference between annualized and actual salary. That
you did not raise the question suggests a fundimental
lack of understanding of the basic rules of accounting.
And poses troubling questions regarding your motivation
on this issue. Stick with the facts - isn't there enough
there?

Re: state employees |
|
Yes,
I agree. it is a travesty that the General Assembly spends
hard earned tax payer money on themselves with little
regard for the general public.
They should be accountable. I have much hope that Governor
Carcieri will bring about much change by energizing the
public to see more clearly what needs to be done to keep
those people in line.
My point in yesterdays email was just to point out that
the common state worker is in no way like the elected
officials and their staff. We are hard working individuals
like any other worker and do not subscribe to the waste
that goes on in our General Assembly.

John,
Now your cooking. I think you are absolutely right when
you say that people don't know how to deal with the abuses
carried out by local government officials. We need someone
who can lead the charge and help the general population
get organized. You can play a large part in that process.
The problem with most talk show hosts is that they do
a great job of stirring up the pot but the flame dies
when the show is over.
What can we do as a group? Lets start something meaningful.

To paraphase President James Garfield, 20th President

If the Congress--General Assembly be intelligent, brave

RI cash cow. How about the cars?? |
|
John,
I hope you stick with the issue of spending at the state
house.
Here is an idea that will add listeners to your program
(and generate activity on your web site): set up a page
for entering the license plate #, time and place your
listeners see state vehicles. Let's build our own list
of these cars and where they go during the day (and night!).
I can't even guess how much the State spends on vehicles,
gas, insurance, etc. that is just a perk for someone.
Keep up the great work and please, please get to the bottom
of this before you move on to the big time in a major
market.

Hi
John,
Thank you for addressing the financial free-for-all in
our State. Thirty years ago I began caring for our states
children as a foster parent. The State was able to compensate
us with $8.00 PER DAY. It went up to $10.00 PER DAY sometime
in the 80's. After much breast-beating and dire concern
over where they would come up with the money, they finally
increased our compensation to $14.00 PER DAY in the past
year. We work 24/7. $5000.00 PER MONTH for Summer interns?
THERE IS NO JUSTICE! They have shifted Dr. Carl over to
DCYF (because they have nowhere else to put him) at a
handsome sum of $127,000.00... to do what? Dr. Carl lives

Providence Skating Rink |
|
Regarding
the Providence Skating Rink, it was mismanaged then put
under Nancy Derrik and the Providence Parks Department,
which she runs. They got the rink back into the black
for the short time they managed it(presumably Nicole Cianci
was taken off the payroll there) but then the new interim
Mayor Lombardi removed it from the Parks Department and
put the rink under the mismanaged Providence Civic Center,
where I assume it remains. The Providence Civic Center,
by the way, has been a grabbag of patronage jobs. It has
been mismanaged for years, because Cianci needed to keep
his hoods employed there. That is the place that needs
a public audit!

The General Assembly's Payroll |
|
John,
In the Providence
Sunday Journal, it states: “When asked recently
if the newly downsized legislature needs to spend as much
this year as its predecessor did a year ago, new House
Speaker William J. Murphy, D-West Warwick, said he doesn’t
yet know”. “before answering that question
Murphy said he would like to see the results of an audit”.
John, why
does the new House Speaker William J. Murphy, D-West Warwick
use the excuse of an “Audit” to hide behind.
If you review page A-11 of Providence Sunday Journal you
will notice that there are approximately “44”
individuals listed with either “Auditor”,
“Budget Analyst”, or “Fiscal”
in their job titles….so what the hell is going on??
You mean to tell me with all these individuals working
for the General Assembly that no one knows where we stand
from a financial standpoint??? Give me a break !! Shouldn’t
they know where they stand from month to month or quarter
to quarter like the rest of us who manage our own personal
finances????
John, you
also bring up an excellent point by stating that in the
private sector when business is slow companies usually
downsize. In this case, the General Assembly or our new
Governor needs to take a chainsaw to the budget as well
as these jobs in the General Assembly. I use to work for
a Telecom company based in Massachusetts and this particular
company downsized from 125,000 employees down to approximately
40,000 employees within 2 years due to layoffs. The job
cuts were attributed to a slow market and low capital
spending by customers. In summary, the General Assembly
should be no exception when it comes to cutting budgets
and downsizing…..
John, thanks
for the excellent program and keep up the great work!!!
Regards,
Karl S.

RE: Bill Irons |
|
John
- Did you believe a word Bill Irons said? What a crock
of sherbet. Why don't they do something BEFORE something
is made public. Why didn't he talk about this BEFORE it
became public. After it becomes public then every one
has an opinion. And you know what they say about opinions.
I hope that you latch on to this story and don't get off
till it is settled. You did this with John Harwood and
you completed that task, he got out, don't get off this
story. If you worked with an open checkbook you could
do what you wanted. Why is there no accountability? Why
is it the state workers receive "FREE" medical
coverage. The teachers are the same way. Who are they.
Everyone else struggles with medical coverage and they
get it free. The state has a huge deficit. Who are they.
Fire the whole damm bunch of them. Lots of people are
looking for jobs. I will be interested in Gov. Carciere's
opinion of this. Forget Linc Almond he was a total waste
of time, but know what see how much class he has, try
to get him on. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Hi
John,
I had a quick
question for you regarding the article on the Supervisor
of the Skating rink Steven J. Moise. It says in the article
that he worked for the rink for 5 years and also says
he never gave up his regular job for the City as a Communications
Inspector for the City's Police and Fire Departments.
I believe from reading this article that he still has
his regular job with the City as a Communication Inspector.
I was very confused and upset reading this article and
correct me if I am wrong but wasn' t until like last year
I believe the Ice Rink owned and operated by the City
Of Providence. If this was true as I believe then he was
receiving not one but two paychecks from the City Of Providence.
How can this be? I know that a private firm took the skating
rink over a while back but not that long ago. If I recall
before that it was owned by the City and run by the City
and they lost so much money that was unaccounted for that
a Private firm took it over I thought last year sometime.
I am upset if this is true because how can one person
have two City jobs if this was in fact true. It says he
never however gave up his regular job as a communications
inspector for the City's Police and Fire Departments.
So as I read it, in the day he worked for the City as
an inspector and I guess what nights and weekends he worked
for the skating rink which was also a City job? Am I correct
in this statement as I am unsure and confused on this
a bit. If I am correct which I believe I may be I am upset
as a taxpayer that someone can collect two paychecks from
the City for not 1 but 2 City jobs. How many people are
out of work and can't find a job and here is someone who
has two cushy City jobs? What about vacation time did
he take a week out of one City job to work another? Does
this time accumulate in Pension etc. These are all questions
that I had reading this article as I thought that the
City owned the Skating Rink and read how much money it
lost and when it was taken over by a private firm. I would
appreciate it if you could look into this for me. Last
I question why he left this position and if I was correct
then why flaunt it in our face he had 2 City jobs?
Sincerely,
Cathy

Katherine Gregg's story |
|
One
thing that was repeated over and over and over in defense
of the outrageous salaries given to these people was,
in effect, "we have to keep up with/match what their
talent would command in the private sector".
Well...that's just fine; so why not ALSO match the private
sector's common practice (almost without exception) that
employees pay at least 50 percent of their healthcare
costs?!?!? Continuing the obscene benefit giveaways to
these "special" people is nearly criminal. I
won't hold my breath waiting for it to change, though.
Keep on bitching, John: maybe it will do a little bit
of good.

Hornoff issue |
|
It's
too bad the Jeffrey Hornoff issue has become so polarized.
The fact he lied does him no good. The last time I checked,
the prosecution had to prove this case, regardless of
the reported inconsistencies of the accused. He has been
slaughtered by one talk show person, using those inconsistencies
as his ammunition.
Hornoff's request for a simple apology stands on it own
simply through the ineptitude of the investigators and
the prosecutors. I don't remember hearing that Hornoff
lied about his committing the murder. I believe he constantly
maintained his innocence. He was also criticized for a
perceived "flirtation" with Today show host
Katie Couric.
Is that even remotely relevant?
A caller, Peter Anthony, stated several times that the
admitted killer should be executed. Flat out executed.
Does this caller realize if that happened, other non-convicted
criminals will not step forward to exonerate the innocent?
I seriously think Peter
Anthony should divulge his IQ to the citizenship of Rhode
Island.
Jeffrey Hornoff deserves an apology, and probably has
a case for
compensation for his incarceration.
I personally call for the resignation of John Depetro
as a "talk show host." He certainly does not
speak from the perspective of an independent man. He is
immature and uninformed.
A more balanced and knowledgeable person in that time
slot would provide WHJJ with more credibility.

articulate himself you rode him. All the while pussyfooting
around Ann, who made a conscience decision to have her

Her mother is done, she raised Ann. She raised her to
be a woman who would rather not raise her own child. Poor
derik was backpeddling so as not to insult her, but still
make his point. You then decided to chastise him, "what
are you afraid to talk to ann, address ann not me, make
your point...." The poor guy couldn't win you made
him so nervous. But sweet spoken ann who would rather
not raise her own child, so as not to change her lifestyle
could just go on and on.With understanding interjections
from you. " I understand... its not easy to be a
police officer in the wake of 9/11.... I know police officers
who work opposite shifts to parent their child in tandem.."
Why didn't you ask her why she hasn't chosen to do this?
Please, he's not even a police officer, he' a detective!
Nice 9 to 5 desk job with benefits. You dropped the ball
on that one!

Cop's Wife |
|
John
The cops wife
blew her point when she said how big her house was 3700
sq ft and she is having one the grandparents babysitting
when she goes to work. Talk about being self centered.
She is not alone with this type of thinking. The young
that think she should have what people start getting in
their early fifties when she is in her early thirties
also it is foolish to build that size in Rhode Island
at this time because of the housing bubble will collapse
sooner than later. She and her husband will be finically
upside down more debt and less assets, also who is going
to pay for this child to go to school the federal government
with student loan or Pell grants. I also think any grandparents
who consistently sit for the grandchildren are foolish,
because their kids have no clue how to budget and make
sacrifices to get ahead and are STILL dependent on the
parents. The parents did a sorry job of teaching responsibility.

Scott Hornoff |
|
Hi
John,
I attended the trial of Scott Hornoff quite regularly
and he and a few of his rogue cop friends really impeded
the whole process with their lies and falsehoods. As far
as Projo sitting with the Cushman family--that is just
not true!! I met the reporter during the trial and became
friendly with her and she sat with my friend and me on
a regular basis.
Randy White is an extremely honest and dedicated prosecutor
who did an exemplary job. It boggles my mind how Hornoff
is sounding off on the AG, Projo, the State Police and
the media. One would wonder why his anger isn't directed
at Todd Barry?? What's wrong with that picture??
It's strange how Hornoff has all of these theories now
of what went down the night of the murder---where was
the hot shot detective when the murder first happened???
Maybe Victoria Cushman wasn't dead when Todd Barry left
her that night--maybe he only thought she was and someone
else finished her off. Just a point to ponder.....

HORNOFF |
|
John,
As a retire police oficer 30 years honorably, my worst
nightmare would be to be jailed and be fingered as an
x-cop. While I was a police officer I was attending Bryant
college, and was studying to obtain my degree in law enforcement.
We had a
socology class were we visited the prision. We spoke to
a police officer who was serving time for murder. (way
before your time) he told us stories of how he was treated
as an x-cop which always was in back of my mind, while
performing my duties as a police officer. I never would
ever do anything wrong anyway, but hearing this ex cop
put the fear of jesus in me.
The nature of the job, working nights for 20 years, coming
home in the a.m. and your wife going to work at 8 .a.m.,could
not be up to talk to you about the night you had, many
of my co workers had girlfriends, strange as it my seem
to you they still loved their family.
I can understand Hornoff lying to protect his marrage.
I have always supported you, always thought you had balls,
but geeeez John, my oponion, have some compasion for Hornoff,
this guy being jailed for a crime he did not commit, and
being an x-cop, serving time as an x-cop has to be a nightmare.
I agree he should not have lied, told the truth, but you
ridiculing him on the air goes beyond all forms of decency.I
wish you would have an opportunity to go to the ACI some
time in the future, and interview someone who was a policeofficer
and see what kind of time he is having, man you got to
have some compasion for Hornoff.
John, go a little easy on this guy, he lost his family,
lost 6 years of his life and his dignity, give him a break.

HORNoff... obstruction of justice=GUILTY |
|
I was surprised
no one called you on this. When you lie during a murder
investigation, you are obstructing justice. I believe
the max is 5 years. You can check it out. It is seldom
used, but if you refuse to cooperate with the law they
can charge you. In this case horned Hornoff lied and an
innocent man went to prison for murder. How ironic it
was him. I think new charges should be filed on this and
the sentence should be commuted since he has done the
time already. The extra year he did was for being a cocky
lying cheating asshole cop. Remember... when a cop is
killed or found guilty for something he didn't do it is
ALWAYS a big deal. They are better than you or me. Keep
the heat on this scumbag.

Scott Hornoff |
|
Hi John,
A close friend
of mine, a RI Trooper, remarked to me that Scott was not
the only Warwick cop who had taken advantage of Ms. Cushman,
and that added to the complete screw up of the Warwick
Police Department and why their investigation became skewed.
The description was that, she was doing half of the department.
It was well known within the department Scott was currently
having an affair. It was thought Scott became upset when
he found out Ms. Cushman was also seeing other men. The
Warwick Police Department was completely out of control
at that time. The department squashed the investigation
to protect more than just Hornoff, and that is why the
State Police were asked to take over. Some eight years
ago, I was conducting an insurance theft and arson investigation
of Fred Warner-Hendrix, the pilot whose plane was found
in Buzzards Bay about one year ago. It involved both the
Warwick and the State Police, and required me to meet
with both at the departments at the same time. Due to
the friction between the two it was very tenuous. The
trooper who I was working with was told by his superiors
not to go in uniform, but to wear civilian clothes. Warwick
was not real cooperative, and Fred Warner was never convicted
of the crimes. Reportedly, Todd Barry went home after
the murder covered in blood, and said to one of his brothers,
he hurt that girl bad. He had another brother who was
a Narragansett cop at the time. Last year his mother passed
away, and he became depressed. It is thought his brothers
talked him into coming forward with the truth. It is not
known when the brother who was the police officer learned
of his involvement. On another note, is it too late to
ask the new Attorney General if he would release the Grand
Jury transcript of the "Hardwood" investigation. I'll
bet it would make good farder for a great talk show. Happy
New Year Jim G

hornoffs grand jury |
|
jd, during
hornoffs presser didn't he say during the second grand
jury that people had,"plates of food, people were
sleeping and snoring." and by the way if i ask anybody
where they were or what time they were there 3 years or
even 5 years ago and they give me the wrong answer that
means they are automatically lying?! cmon john, you camped
out during the cianci trial why not put some of these
people who hornoff claims did him wrong feet to the fire?
it seems alot of people are scared of the state police
and the a.g. food for thought.

Jail |
|
You think
there's nothing wrong with spending six years in jail
because a man lied? You make statements like "When
in doubt, vote Republican" and you call yourself
the independent man? You lie on a daily basis. Should
you go to jail for six years?

Re: No callers |

The problem
with gassing up an SUV which gets less mileage than 4
cylinder vehicles is that we live in a world where not
everyone even has the bare necessities of life like clean
water and food. Tto be so self centered as to say "I
do it because I can" is to keep alive the Ugly American
image in the world. It's all about ego and greed...I don't
think Jesus would drive an SUV, do you?

John,
You talk out both ends. You put down Mike Barnacle constantly
but why don't you put down IMUS who supports Barnacle
and is a big friend of his. YOUR A WAFFLER!

Hornoff info |
|
Hi John, I
was listening to you Wed. talking about Jeffrey Scott
Hornoff & why you can't muster any sympathy for him.
I know a retired Warwick cop who was around when the investigation
was going on. It was well known in the dept that Hornoff
liked to drink, a lot. After I heard that my speculation
is when he found Victoria Cushman murdered he was drunk
& didn't want to get caught & face DWI charges.
Word going around Warwick is he will try to get reinstated
on the PD, then go for a disability pension & move
to FL ( word also going around is once he does get the
pension, how soon will he start drinking again).
Also, did
you know that Todd Barry's brother Ward Barry received
a disability pension from ( I think ) the Narragansett
PD & is living in FL.?

re: "suv" caller |
|
what gas line
were you waiting in, back in 1974&1979?
point-we did not learn the lesson with the gas guzzling
gluts of vehicles we drive. ex Cadillac Fleetwood or olds
98 with 6 mpg, back then& now the suv.
most suv drivers think they own the road and if you don't
believe me, just drive down rt. 93 south from loon Mt.
any Sunday night.

Hornoff |
|
I have listened with "wonder" to the people who think
he got a raw deal. And the coverage on the TODAY SHOW
was ludicrous. As you have said, he knew (and knows) the
rules. He was a police officer. If a suspect consistently
lies, changes his story on a regular basis, did have an
affair with Miss Cushman and could not account for his
time he would look quilty to anyone - including a jury
of his peers and Jeffrey Scott Hornoff!!!!!!!! To my way
of thinking, this finger pointing of his is foolish. His
finger should be pointed to himself. It has everything
to do with Personal Responsibility. He is the only person
who is responsible for what happened.

DEAR JOHN:
AM SO TIRED OF LISTENING OR READING ABOUT THE POOR, MISUNDERSTOOD

DONT WANT TO LET EVERYBODY ELSE HAVE THE SAME PRIVILEDGE.
BEST EXAMPLE IS THE
CARTOON, "WHAT WOULD MOHAMMED DRIVE?" AND LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR FROM EMILY
CALLACI (CALL ACI ?)!!! FROM CRANSTON & MEIGHAN BELL
LARBI, HOBOKEN, NJ.
THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Speaker-Elect Murphy |
|
Hi I.M.
I have been
extremely skeptical of this "new" leadership
team of Murphy, Fox and 110% Menard because of their strong
ties to Pucky Harwood. I hope that you , as the Independent
Voice of R.I., do not become too enthralled with Mr Murphy
just yet. The guy has one of the worst reform records
in the legislature as recorded by all the Reform organizations
and a leopard doesn't usually change it's spots.
He bloccked
DEBATE on S.O.P. at Pucky's behest, he gutted the Conflict
of Interest Commission by supporting legislative lawyers
to appear before State boards, he supported the bypass
mode by which Magistrates a la Mrs. Pucky are appointed
as lifetime jurists, and he has opposed tort reform proposals,
etc etc etc.
Now he proposes
a "thorough" independent audit of the JCLS expenditures
that has been a treasure chest of corruption for Pucky's
Pirates. BUT....instead of commencing the audit As Of
1993 when Harwood's reign began and the date of the real
last audit; Speaker-Elect Murphwood proposes to audit
the period commencing with JULY 2002 !!! Are you kidding
us Murphwood??? That's even POST-WENDY ...not to mention
some of the others !!!!!!
Fortunately
Sen. Irons appears adamant that the audit go back to 1993
and he needs your support as well as the public's support
in this matter. The Senate also needs to be an equal player
on the JCLS from now on !
Lastly, if
Speaker Murphwood was really serious about S.O.P. , he
could begin the process immediately without waiting for
the 2004 referendum. He could just start to turn over
to the Executive Branch various powers that presently
reside in his domain.
John, I hope
you will cast a weary I on this guy until he addresses
some of the aforementioned items as well as removing some
of Pucky's Deadwood Cronies from the State payroll.

Live on the internet? |
|
Good Afternoon!
We are residents of RI but currently are snowbirds in
Florida. I've been looking over your web site and was
looking for the link to listen to you live on the air
each day.
I've looked
over your "audio & video" link, and actually
listened to a couple of archive shows. We wanted to listen
to you live daily and was wondering if this is possible
to do?
Happy New
Year!

Ran into your pal Steve Laffey the other day. He liked

Lively Experiment |
|
John,
Just another
thought about your favorite TV show...
After consulting
with several of my associates, I have determined the "perfect
crime" could have been committed during the recently canceled
"Lively Experiment". While the show itself was a crime,
anybody could have murdered someone on the set while the
show was on the air and had their case thrown out of court
due to lack of witnesses.
You think?

Buddy Cianci |
|
Dear Mr. DePetro:
I take back
my feelings toward you in regards to your attacks Buddy
Cianci. After reading the complete Journal series on Mr.Cianci,
I have a completely different outlook on your condemnation
of Mr. Cianci. I find it hard to believe that a man so
devious and vidictive could have remained in office as
long as he has. Why he was not sentenced to jail time
for his treatment of Mr.DeLeo is beyond belief. A charge
of kidnapping would have been justified.I will cut short
my feelings at this point, but the day will come when this
man will be released from jail and again will aspire to
become mayor or hold some office of authority. If you
still have a voice to be heard please don't let him off
the hook.
Yours Truly

The Right Idea!! |
|
John,
I enjoyed
your little "contest" today regarding callers naming the
titles of Christmas carols. I especially enjoyed the elderly
lady who sang along with the songs as they played. She
had the right idea about being happy as she stated, "Every
day I get up my legs work and my brain works".
Life is a
gift and she was correct in her assumption about enjoying
every moment of it. In 1981 I was diagnosed with Cancer.
Twenty-one years later I'm still enjoying the "little
things" in life such as spectacular sunrises, the sounds
of the birds on a Spring morning and the smell of wildflowers
in the Summer. In spite of the fact the "demon" shows
its ugly head every once in a while (I had two surgeries
in July and August) I still count my blessings and enjoy
the "gift".
This time
of year brings many people happiness. However, there are
some who dislike the holiday season. Enjoy the time we
have here. This is not a dress-rehearsal!
Also, I'm
still awaiting the mug-shot of Buddy without the rug!
John V !
